Ganglion Impar Block

A GANGLION IMPAR BLOCK IS A QUICK, MINIMALLY-INVASIVE PROCEDURE USED TO RELIEVE CHRONIC VAGINAL, RECTAL, AND PELVIC PAIN BY BLOCKING NERVE IMPULSES.

THE GANGLION IMPAR IS THE LAST SET OF SYMPATHETIC NERVES AND IS LOCATED AROUND THE COCCYX.

These nerves receive pain signals from the perineum, distal rectum, anus, distal urethra, vulva, and distal third of the vagina. A ganglion impar block can potentially relieve pain coming from any of these pelvic areas. During the procedure, you will lay face-down and receive a local anesthetic at the point of the injection. With the guidance of fluoroscopy, a steroid is injected in the spot for one of two reasons: diagnosis or pain relief. If immediate pain relief does not occur, then the ganglion impar is not the source of the pain and the doctor will have a better idea of what could possibly be giving you such pain.
