What is an Injection for Pain
There are three main types of pain injections which can be performed by your physician. These include:
Bursa Injections: The bursa is the fluid sac near a joint like the knee, elbow or shoulder. Inflammation can occur in these sacs which is known as bursitis. Bursa injections work to reduce the inflammation in those sacs.
Tendon Injections: Inflammation in the tendons causes tendonitis. Tendons are thick cords that connect your muscles to your bones. Inflammation in the tendons causes tenderness and acute pain. Tendon injections help reduce pain in your tendons.
Joint Injections: When inflammation occurs in the joint it is referred to as arthritis. Joint injections reduce inflammation and swelling in the joints.
There are a variety of substances that can be used in the injections. These can include non-steroidal/natural liquid in addition to steroids, and numbing agents. Your provider will speak with you to choose the best injectable for your condition and total health.
Dr. Julie Saranita, D.O. shares, "If you have pain stemming from joint inflammation, then you may benefit from an injection or rounds of injections." Further she adds, "Injections are minimally invasive, which means they just use the needle inserted into the body involving minimal damage of body tissue. This procedure can be performed in our office or outpatient surgery center depending upon the patient procedure and overall health condition."
If you have suffered from chronic pain and would like to understand your pain management options speak with one of our providers about whether a pain injection might be right for you.
