What is an Epidural Injection?
What is an epidural injection?
An epidural injection is a minimally invasive procedure that can help relieve neck, arm, back and leg pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves. Medications are delivered to the epidural space, which is a fat filled area between the spinal bones and the protective sac of the spinal nerves.
Who is a candidate for an epidural injection?
Patients who experience pain in the neck, arm, low back or leg may benefit from an epidural injection. Patients with the following conditions may benefit:
- Spinal stenosis
- Spondylolisthesis
- Herniated disc
- Degenerative disc
- Sciatica
Who performs an epidural injection?
Our physician providers, Dr. Saranita and Dr. Paez perform this minimally invasive procedure in our office or outpatient surgery center.
What happens after treatment?
Most patients can walk immediately after the procedure. After being monitored for a short period of time you will be able to leave the office. Occasionally, some leg weakness can linger therefore we have someone drive you home after your procedure.
Most patients resume full activity the day after their procedure. Soreness may occur around the injection site that can be relieved by using ice or taking a mild analgesic such as Tylenol.
We encourage patients to monitor and record their pain levels during the next couple of weeks. Speak with your provider about changes in your pain levels following your procedure.
If you believe an epidural injection might be right for you, speak with one of our providers to learn more.
