June is Men's Health Month
The goal of men's health month is to raise awareness that men, on average, die almost 5-years earlier than women. Part of the reason is that men tend to be more reluctant to go to the doctor. In fact, studies show that women go to the doctor twice as much as men. June allows us health providers to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice.
General Health- Even if you do not feel sick it is important to see your doctor. Here are some of the screening tests recommended depending upon your age:
- Blood pressure
- Cancer screening
- Depression

- Lipid Disorders
- Heart examine
- STD
- Hernia
- Prostate
- Testicular cancer
- Skin cancer screening
Illness- According to the Health in Aging Foundation, 40% of men said that they delay seeking medical care for at least a few days and 17% said they wait at least one week. Do not wait, prompt medical care can be the difference between life and death.
Medications- It is important to take medications as directed and keep a list of your medications handy.
Exercise- Daily exercise is important to maintaining strength, mobility and a healthy lifestyle. Speak with your health provider regarding any limitations you may believe you have.
Use Sunscreen- Up to 50% of Americans who live to be age 65 will have at least one skin cancer.
Raise Awareness- Statistics show that men deal with more illness than women and die younger. Encourage men in your life to seek regular check ups and seek care for health issues.
