How Can Kyphoplasty Help Me?
Fractures can occur in the bones of the spine which are known as vertebral fractures. These fractures can be quite painful, especially if the pressure is placed on the nearby roots.
While non-operative treatments can be used like pain medication, braces and modifications to your activity, pain can still persist as healing takes place. Vertebral fractures can take up to six months to heal naturally.
A treatment option for many patients is kyphoplasty. Kyphoplasty is an immediate fix for the fracture by making space in the bone where the collapse occurred.
Our physicians can perform kyphoplasty in our office or outpatient surgery center depending upon your condition and overall health. The procedure is performed by using a thin surgical needle with a balloon inside of it. The instrument is inserted into the skin, through the muscles and into the bone. The balloon is inflated and allows the space to regain its shape while a filler mixer is injected through the needle and balloon. The procedure stabilizes the fracture and provides immediate relief to most patients.
The procedure is considered minimally invasive and usually takes less than one hour to perform.
